How does one identify an expert?

An expert is an individual with a particular expertise, superior technical knowledge and experience in a particular field. Since the designation is not legally defined or protected by law in Germany, individuals who do not meet the above-mentioned criteria can describe themselves as experts. For example, public appointment and swearing-in as an expert, or certification by a body accredited by the German Accreditation Council, are signs of expertise.
